| DEVILS MAKE MOVE TOWARD SILVER TITLE |
GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: Senior Katie Kummerer and her Hinsdale Central teammates knew it had a challenge this season after graduating a great group of seniors. In a meeting of two state-ranked teams in the Illinois Cross Country Coaches Poll, the No. 6-ranked Red Devils came through again with a convincing 22-33 victory over No. 8 York Sept. 24 in West Suburban Conference Silver Division dual action at East End Park in Elmhurst. Both teams also defeated Proviso West 15-50. "We knew it was going to be a competitive race, but we were ready and we all just had positive excitement," Kummerer said. Senior Graylin Harrison edged York senior and 2008 all-stater Meghan Frigo 16 minutes , 41.2 seconds to 16:41 for first place. The Red Devils then took third through fifth with Jill Hardies (17:09), Kummerer (17:09) and Hailey Krzyston (17:11). Grace Klein was ninth (18:02). The Red Devils, who already have also beaten No. 10 Lyons Township in their dual, now only need a top-two finish at the Silver Meet Oct. 17 to guarantee at least a share of their eighth straight overall Silver title. "That (title) would just be a dream come true," Kummerer said. "We just ignored everyone who was saying we lost five seniors. We just put that aside and worked extremely hard this summer because we knew we would have to step it up. It's working out well for us right now. The hard work is paying off." © Copyright 2009 Digital Chicago, Inc. |
